The communist government leader said the China-ASEAN virtual summit, held to celebrate 30 years of relations between the two sides, would help regional peace, stability and development.

China will never seek hegemony or use its size to interfere with small countries, and will work with ASEAN to eliminate interference,” Xi Jinping said, as quoted by Reuters. Reuters.

The summit began without a Myanmar representative present, according to two sources familiar with the meeting. The reason for the absence was not immediately clear, and a spokesman for the Myanmar military government did not answer a phone call for comment.

Myanmar’s junta leader Min Aung Hlaing, who has led a bloody crackdown on dissent since seizing power from Myanmar’s civilian government on February 1, 2021, was expelled from the ASEAN summit last October.
