China Defends Rights in South China Sea Amid Clashes with Philippines

Beijing

China confirms that he will legally defend his rights in South China Seafollowing the latest clashes between Beijing ships and ships Filipina in waters that are disputed by many countries.

China claims almost all of the waters of the South China Sea, and has sought to assert sovereignty in the region despite rival claims from Southeast Asian countries. Beijing also ignored an international arbitration ruling that ruled its claims in the South China Sea had no legal basis.

Tensions between China and the Philippines have flared in recent months, as ships from the two countries clashed near the contested area, and the latest standoff occurred this week.

“We will legally defend our rights in accordance with the law,” stressed China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi in a press conference during the annual meeting of parliamentarians in Beijing, as reported AFPThursday (7/3/2024).

“Regarding maritime disputes, China has always maintained a high level of self-control,” he said.

“But of course, we do not allow our good intentions to be misused, and we do not accept any deliberate distortion or violation of maritime law,” Wang added in his statement.

On Tuesday (5/3) local time, Philippine authorities summoned China’s diplomatic representatives after accusing Chinese Coast Guard ships of triggering two collisions with Philippine ships, and firing water cannon at one of the ships carrying out logistics supply missions in the China Sea South.
