China declares the country’s corona epidemic “fundamentally” over

DThe Chinese health authorities have declared the corona epidemic in the People’s Republic to be “fundamentally” over. Officials said at a press conference in Beijing on Thursday that seven cases of the highly contagious omicron subvariant XBB.1.5 that had been imported from abroad had been identified since January 8th.

However, China has won a “great and decisive victory” over the corona virus, which is a prime example of disease prevention and control in populous countries. In addition, the health system was strengthened and the number of intensive care beds increased from 198,000 to 404,000.

The Chinese leadership had already announced a “decisive victory” over Corona last week, speaking of the lowest death rate in the world. However, experts doubt the official corona numbers in China due to a lack of transparency.

At the end of last year, the government backed away from its strict zero-Covid policy after public displeasure had grown. The Chinese economy has also suffered greatly from the rigid corona policy.
