China deal: What’s wrong with this city council?

Beat Schuler writes: “The canton prohibits the city council from transferring the 2,000 m2 of land in Schachen that it sold to the Chinese at the beginning of 2021. This will remain the case until the ongoing legal proceedings have been concluded.

It is well known that the city council, as the recently published ruling of the administrative court shows, “arbitrarily” undermined the optional referendum. And, as we know, it secretly pushed through the China deal with the Chinese. Much of what the city council previously denied is now fact following the court ruling and now the canton’s order.

What distrust must the canton have towards the city council if it feels compelled to issue a ban on the transfer of the land to the Chinese?

Courageous behind the principle of collegiality

If the canton takes such drastic measures against a city authority, how can we citizens, who increasingly feel like subjects, have confidence in such magistrates and elect them for a next term of office?

It is time for the city councillors who supported or did not support this land sale and who have remained silent about it to this day to speak out and explain themselves instead of cowardly hiding behind the principle of collegiality.

In this blatant case of disregard for the people’s rights, the motto is especially true: if you go along with it, you’ll get caught.”
