BEIJING – China criticizes Germany’s new strategy for relations with Beijing. China called it “counterproductive” after Berlin said it would reduce its dependence on the Chinese economy.
Asked about the strategy document during Friday’s press conference (14/7/2023), Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin suggested the new policies would only damage bilateral relations.
He said Beijing prefers to see Berlin as a partner rather than a rival.
“We believe that it is counterproductive to compete and practice protectionism in the name of ‘reducing risk’ and ‘reducing dependency’, and overly expands the concept of security and politicizes normal cooperation. Such a move would only pose a risk,” he stressed.
He added, “A German approach will exacerbate world divisions.”
Released by the German Foreign Ministry on Thursday, the strategy calls China a “strategic rival” and calls for reducing trade with the country.
The 40-page document accused Beijing of trying to make other countries “more dependent on China.”
It noted that Germany relies on China in several areas, including rare metals and elements, medical technology and medicine, as well as for information technology and products used to manufacture semiconductors.
