Beijing: China has locked more than 100,000 online accounts for allegedly spreading ‘fake news’. The cyberspace regulator said it has deleted 107,000 accounts of fake news units and news anchors and 835,000 fake news items since April 6. China has stepped up censorship of social media to prevent false news and rumours. Platforms such as Twitter are accused of favoring topical hashtags produced by the media and withholding hashtags about issues or events deemed sensitive by the government.
The government has already made it clear that it will control online media that spread harmful propaganda against the reputation of businesses and entrepreneurs. Earlier, many people were arrested for spreading fake news.
