Jakarta –
China is being confronted with an outbreak of monkeypox, a disease that caused a commotion some time ago in Europe and the United States.
According to data from the World Health Organization (WHO), in the week of
July 21, 2023, there were 117 confirmed cases of monkeypox in China. Meanwhile, in the week between 5 May and 21 July 2023, there were 315 cases of monkeypox reported in the country.
“This comes after only six confirmed cases in all of 2022,” according to WHO data.
Additionally, the WHO also said China had its highest increase in weekly case numbers during the last week of full reporting, and cases had increased by more than 50 percent over the last three weeks.
“As we know not only from COVID… we are only seeing the tip of the iceberg and we are not really sure what the true magnitude of the problem is,” Dr. Peter-Chin Hong, an infectious disease specialist at the University of California, San Francisco, told ABC News.
“Of course, mpox hasn’t gone away and we’ve seen it here. But I think that’s exemplified in places that haven’t seen a lot of mpox before.
Previously, a global monkeypox outbreak began in the UK in the spring of 2022. It then spread across Europe to the US. Currently, China is still implementing COVID restrictions with very little travel allowed in and out of the country.
Although the WHO declared an mpox public health emergency in May 2023, that is when cases began to increase in Asia, including Japan, Thailand and most recently, China.
