China’s Foreign Ministry released an inquiry shortly after Lai landed in New York, confirming it opposes any “Taiwan independence separatist” visit to the US.
“Lai stubbornly adheres to the separatist position of Taiwan independence and has constantly been a troublemaker,” China’s foreign ministry said in a statement.
Taiwan, said China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is “the core of China’s core interests.” Beijing also said that facts have repeatedly shown that the reason for the escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait was triggered by Taipei’s attitude of trying to ‘rely on the US to seek independence’.
“China is following developments closely and will take decisive action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said China’s foreign ministry.
