China Condemns Vice President William Lai’s Controversial Visit to the US

Beijing

Government China issued a strong condemnation of the short visit of the Vice President (Wapres) Taiwan William Lai the United States of America (US) on weekends. Beijing accuses Lai of being a separatist and a “constant troublemaker”.

As reported Reuters, Monday (14/8/2023), the Chinese government also emphasized that it would take firm steps to protect its sovereignty. Taipei responded to this assertion, which in turn accused Beijing of being a ‘troublemaker’.

Lai, who is the front-runner for Taiwan’s next president in elections in January next year, arrived in New York, US, on Saturday (12/8) local time, for what is officially billed as a transit stop on his way to Paraguay for the country’s presidential inauguration. the.

China, which claims Taiwan as part of its sovereign territory, has repeatedly criticized Lai’s journey, including his transit in San Francisco, USA, on Wednesday (9/8) and then on his way home.

China’s Foreign Ministry released an inquiry shortly after Lai landed in New York, confirming it opposes any “Taiwan independence separatist” visit to the US.

“Lai stubbornly adheres to the separatist position of Taiwan independence and has constantly been a troublemaker,” China’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Taiwan, said China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is “the core of China’s core interests.” Beijing also said that facts have repeatedly shown that the reason for the escalating tensions in the Taiwan Strait was triggered by Taipei’s attitude of trying to ‘rely on the US to seek independence’.

China is following developments closely and will take decisive action to defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” said China’s foreign ministry.
