China challenges US restrictions on semiconductors at the WTO

Published on :

Beijing initiates proceedings against Washington before the World Trade Organization. China believes that the United States is breaking the rules of international trade with its restrictions on the export of American semiconductors to China.

In October, the United States announced new export controls to limit Beijing’s ability to purchase certain types of semiconductors, used in particular for military applications, and to prevent Chinese factories from being able to reproduce them.

There are many controversies between the two countries: imbalance in trade relations, the situation in Hong Kong, American relations with Taiwan, human rights and even the technological rivalry. However, at the G20 in Bali, China and the US agreed to improve their trade relations.

Just days before the export restrictions on these chips, the US Department of Defense had blacklisted 13 new Chinese companies, such as the world leader in drones DJI. Washington has advanced these companies’ alleged ties to the Chinese military.
