China must unite with Taiwan, and it must do so peacefully, Chinese President Xi Jinping has said, adding that he does not see separatism. Beijing’s “host” statement follows tensions between China and the neighboring island. Taiwan, for its part, has stated that the future of the island is in the hands of its people.
Taiwan seceded from China in 1949 when the Communists took over. It considers itself a sovereign state, while China sees it as its province. Beijing has previously indicated that force could be used to achieve “reunification”. Tensions between Beijing and Tapea also escalated this week, with China sending a record number of military aircraft to Taiwan’s air defense zone.
