China said on Sunday it was “deeply concerned” by the clashes which have already left hundreds dead between Israel and Palestinians and urged all parties to “restraint”.
“China is deeply concerned about the current escalation of tensions and violence between Palestine and Israel and calls on all parties concerned to remain calm and exercise restraint, cease fire immediately, protect civilians and prevent further deterioration of the situation,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
MOST. Chinese diplomacy, which earlier this year facilitated the spectacular rapprochement between Iran and Saudi Arabia, regularly claims to want to make its contribution to the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, which has been at a standstill since 2014.
“The repeated clashes between Palestine and Israel fully demonstrate that the long-term stagnation of the peace process is not sustainable,” the Chinese Foreign Ministry said on Sunday. The fundamental outcome of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict lies in the implementation of the so-called two-state solution and the creation of an independent Palestinian state,” he stressed, reaffirming a traditional position of China.
Until recently little involved in the Israeli-Palestinian issue compared to the United States, China, which otherwise maintains good relations with Israel, is now asserting its position on the subject more forcefully.
