According to Wang Yi, head of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the China Company, “certain forces” are hindering the settlement of the conflict, pursuing goals much larger than Ukraine.
The head of the Foreign Affairs Office of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China, Wang Yi, said that the peace talks between Ukraine and Russia were interrupted at the start of a full-scale war. His speech at the Munich Security Conference on February 18 is quoted by South China Morning Post.
According to Wang Yi, China stands for a peaceful settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. The Chinese diplomat suggested that Russian-Ukrainian talks were disrupted by a third party.
“We don’t know why the process was interrupted. Some forces may not want peace talks to take place. They don’t care about the life and death of Ukrainians, or harm to Europe,” the Chinese representative said. “Their strategic goals may be greater than Ukraine itself.”
Reuters reports that Wang Yi suggested to European politicians “everyone start calmly thinking about how to stop this war,” while the Chinese do not want to “add fuel to the fire.” Soon, China should release an official document that will confirm its position on this issue, in particular, a call for the territorial integrity of all countries.
Wang Yi also called on Europe to work with China to prevent a future cold war. On the sidelines of the conference, the official spoke with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and conveyed that the Chinese authorities were ready to “completely resume” relations with Berlin after the aggravation caused by Russian support, according to the Xinhua news agency. He made the same promise to French President Emmanuel Macron on February 15 and to Italian Deputy Prime Minister on February 16. He drew attention to the fact that the Chinese economy has improved significantly after the lifting of quarantine in connection with Covid-19.
On February 16, the head of the Republican Party in the US Senate, Mitch McConnell, said that China, together with Iran, is helping the Russian Federation to fight with Ukraine. In his opinion, the incident with a Chinese balloon over the United States proved that Beijing is openly in conflict with Washington.
The day before, it became known that China supported Iran in the confrontation with the United States and the West. Chinese leader Xi Jinping said during talks with Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi that Beijing is opposed to “outside forces” allegedly interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.
