In February 2021, the two countries reached an agreement to withdraw troops from the lake and stop patrols.
In a recent development, China’s People’s Liberation Army has started building a bridge across Pangong Lake to cut the time it takes to reach Indian military posts on the lake’s south bank.

By having this bridge, the PLA hopes to prevent the Indian Army from repeating the “Operation Snow Leopard” that took place in August 2020 to capture the dominating highlands on the southern bank of the 135km long lake divided between India and China in East Ladakh.

In that operation, India took over profitable places like Black Top, Helmet Top, Rechin-la and Rezang-La from Kailash’s line. This made India dominate the entire Pangong region.

“The Chinese were surprised by the fast movement and build-up (on the southern edge of Pangong)… They may have learned a lesson, and because they were quick to take corrective action, several measures have been initiated to ensure that their movement through the area is quicker and easier. they have the ability to massively increase attendance,” a source told news outlet The Print, explaining the reason for the bridge’s construction.
