Beijing. Three Mexicans were awarded “gold” by the Public Diplomacy Association of China, for their work in promoting the culture of that country.
Noelia Rodríguez, Maxilimiliano Carrera and André Carrera received the recognition for the Spanish-language content they produce for their YouTube channel, but specifically for a video in which they highlight 8 reasons to visit the Asian country.
In an interview, Maximiliano (Max) explains that his adventure in China began in 2019, when he left Mexico to work at a packing plant that was in the process of opening operations in Tijuana. Noelia joined him in 2020, when a temporary visit for the fashion student turned into a stay, due to the coronavirus pandemic.
As a result of this crisis, the couple began to learn Mandarin Chinese and raised Max and Noeliaa YouTube channel with nearly 8 million subscribers, in which travels through the third largest country in the world show the daily life and peculiarities of China.
“We often interview people about their perspective on Mexico in this country and we try to promote cultural relations on both sides, because there are many prejudices between the two countries,” explains Max.
For example, the content creator talks about a video recorded in China in which the main question of the survey is “what is the first thing you think of when I say Mexico?” The answers reach “drugs, guns”, even from small children.
The same thing happened on the other side of the ocean when Mexicans were asked about China. “They eat rats, they are poor, they are communists,” they would reply, like old stereotypes that have been changed by “technological development,” Carrera recounts.
The award for Max and Noelia It was created through the video “Eight reasons why you should visit China,” in which André Carrera, a pilot student who still lives in Mexico, also collaborated.
