The China-Australia Astronomical Union Research Center recently held a seminar at the University of Western Australia in Perth, Australia, to mark the 60th anniversary of astronomical science research cooperation between the two countries. About 100 experts in the field of astronomical science research from both sides attended the event.
Director Stavely Smith said at the seminar that researchers from both countries had accurately identified the location of a large amount of powerful radio wave explosions coming from a galactic object more than 7 billion light-years away from Earth.
He added that he believes that the cornerstone of astronomical research cooperation between China and Australia is the exchange of ideas and technologies on astrophysics, cosmology, and understanding the universe. Such exchanges have always brought progress in science.
In 1963, Professor Wilbur Norman Christiansen, a fellow at the Australian Academy of Sciences and an astronomer, visited China and helped build the first 9m diameter aperture synthesis radio telescope.
Since then, astronomers from both countries have carried out extensive and in-depth cooperation in various fields of astronomical science research, including radio astronomy, optical astronomy, astronomical instruments and instruments, and achieved significant results.
Director Stablely Smith said that countries such as Australia and China signed the ‘Agreement to Establish a Square Kilometer Array Observatory’ as founding member states.
