(Beijing = Yonhap News) Correspondent Han Jong-gu = China announced military exercises in the sea near Hainan in the south from the 21st to the 23rd.
According to the China Maritime Administration on the 20th, the Qinglan Maritime Bureau announced through navigational safety information that it would conduct military exercises in the South China Sea from 6:00 pm on the 21st to 8:00 am on the 23rd.
The Department of Maritime Affairs marked the square-shaped training area and announced that vessels were prohibited from entering the training area.
The coordinates of the training area announced by the Maritime Affairs Bureau were confirmed to be off the coast of Wenchang City, Hainan Province.
China usually announces the training waters and prohibits ships from entering during military drills accompanied by live ammunition.
However, the Maritime Affairs Bureau did not explain the content and purpose of the training.
The training area is about 1,000 km from Taiwan’s southern waters, and about 350 km from the Shisa Islands (Paracel Islands, Vietnam’s Hoang Sa Islands), which caused conflict with China when the US Navy destroyer USS Milius entered last month.
