Under the new guidelines, some asymptomatic and mild cases of Covid-19 can now be quarantined at home rather than isolated in centralized government facilities.
The frequency and scope of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tests will also be reduced, the National Health Commission (NHC) has announced.
Mandatory mass testing will only apply to “high-risk” areas and schools.
Additionally, people traveling between provinces will no longer need a negative test within 48 hours and will not need to be tested upon arrival.
The rules were eased after demonstrations across the country against the ruling Communist Party’s strict zero-covid-19 strategy.
The protests have also turned into calls for greater political freedom, with some even calling for the resignation of President Xi Jinping.
