China announces another 11 deaths from covid in Shanghai and more than 2,000 new cases

The Chinese National Health Commission announced this Friday the death of eleven people from covid in the eastern metropolis of Shanghaiwhich brings the total death toll since the epidemic began to 4,674.

The city, which recorded its first deaths from covid on Monday, adds –according to the official version– a total of 36 deceased since the lockdown began more than a month ago following a sharp rise in cases.

China is going through a wave of regrowth attributed to the omicron variant that is causing record numbers of infections not seen since the start of the pandemic in the first half of 2020.

Thus, the Commission today reported 2,133 new positive cases of the coronavirus detected the day before, 2,119 of them due to local contagion and the rest imported.

The localities with the highest number of cases of community transmission were Shanghai (is, 1,931) Jilin (northeast, 63), Heilongjiang (northeast, 34) and Jiangxi (southeast, 33).

The health authorities also reported today the detection of 16,465 asymptomatic cases16,383 of them local (the majority in Shanghai), although Beijing does not count them as confirmed cases unless they show symptoms.

The remaining infections, found among travelers from abroad, were detected in various regions of the country. The total number of active infected in mainland China amounts to 30,813, 251 of them in serious condition.

According to the institution’s accounts, since the start of the pandemic, 196,086 people have been infected in the country and 4,674 have died. To date, medical follow-up has been carried out on more than three million close contacts with those infected, of which 431,118 are still under observation.

To stop the escalation of infections, the authorities have indicated that from this Friday various measures will be implemented including conducting massive tests in various areas of the city.
