China Angry at Dior, What’s Up?

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – The Dior fashion brand is on a rampage China. The French brand has drawn controversy on Bamboo Curtain social media after being accused of tarnishing the image of Chinese women.

This happened this week after a photo was displayed at the Dior fashion exhibition, at Shanghai’s West Bund Art Center. A model is seen wearing traditional Chinese clothes and holding a Dior bag, with slanted eyes and black skin.

This is considered not in accordance with the standards of typical Chinese beauty, which is characterized by large eyes and fair skin. Dior is considered to portray women with Western stereotypes.

Even though it has been revoked, Chinese netizens are still arguing about this. On Weibo, for example, the topic “Dior’s photo smears Asian descent” was widely circulated. Some even ask for an explanation from the company and the photographer who took the photo.

“Neither the proud (photo) creator nor Dior are ready to respond, as if they are belittling netizens who they say don’t understand art,” one post reads. Global Times, Friday (11/19/2021).

An article in local media China Women’s News wrote that Western brands like Dior were showing “pride and prejudice” about their aesthetics and culture. This, the media wrote, reflects an intention to tarnish the image of Chinese women and distort culture.

Meanwhile, Dior is not the only foreign product that has sparked criticism in Xi Jinping’s country. LV was also criticized for making the “Qing Dynasty filter” because the clothes and hairstyles of the models were similar to those of the people of that era.

The same thing happened to the Italian luxury brand, Dolce & Gabbana. Portraits of a Chinese model eating Italian food with chopsticks are said to be insulting to the country and its culture.
