China and US focused on strategic dialogue with Sullivan visit

Beijing, Aug 27 (Prensa Latina) U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan arrives in China today to hold strategic talks with Foreign Minister Wang Yi at a time of renewed bilateral tensions.

The agenda will run until August 29 and a review of progress in the implementation of bilateral agreements is expected after the San Francisco Summit between the main leaders of each nation.

According to the Asian side, one of the issues on the table will be the position regarding Taiwan and strategic security.

In particular, Beijing will stress that the United States must adhere to the “one China” principle and honor its promise not to support “Taiwan independence.”

In addition, the Asian side will demand an end to the politicization of economic and trade issues, as well as unilateral measures that harm national interests.

According to the Foreign Ministry here, Beijing will refute the US accusations that China poses a threat to the international order.

Wang Yi and Jake Sullivan have already held three rounds of strategic dialogue in Vienna, Malta and Bangkok, but this is the first time in eight years that a US National Security Advisor has travelled to the Asian giant.

Since the summit between Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping in San Francisco, China and the United States have established more than 20 dialogue mechanisms and the two sides have maintained communication between the foreign relations, finance, law enforcement and climate change teams, as well as the two militaries.

However, Beijing has repeatedly accused Washington of continuing its efforts to contain and repress the Asian giant, so the risks for bilateral relations continue to increase.

Some voices believe that due to the growing “trust deficit” between the two nations and the end of Biden’s term, Sullivan’s visit at this point is of little value.

However, other experts believe that the meeting with Wang Yi will be an extensive and strategic communication, as well as an important opportunity for the two sides to exchange views.

In November this year, the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2024 summit and the G20 leaders’ summit will be held in Peru and Brazil.

According to US media reports, US officials revealed that “both US and Chinese leaders are likely to attend.”

In this regard, Wu Xinbo, dean of the Institute of International Studies in China, said that the possibility of a meeting between the presidents of both countries during the multilateral activities of these events cannot be ruled out.
