A reporter asked: Recently, on the second anniversary of the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nicaragua, President Xi Jinping had a phone conversation with President Ortega, and the two heads of state announced the formal establishment of a strategic partnership between China and Nicaragua. This is the culmination of this year’s continued expansion and deepening of the “circle of friends” between China and Latin American countries. Could the spokesperson further introduce the relevant situation of China-Nepal and China-Latin America cooperation?

Wang Wenbin: President Xi Jinping and President Ortega jointly announced the establishment of a strategic partnership between China and Nicaragua. This is a major event in the history of bilateral relations. The establishment of a strategic partnership between China and Nigeria is in the common interests of the two countries and their peoples, and is conducive to promoting the common development and prosperity of the two countries. In the two years since the resumption of diplomatic relations, under the guidance of heads of state diplomacy, both sides have firmly grasped the direction of China-Nigeria relations. Political mutual trust has been continuously consolidated, strategic coordination has become increasingly close, practical cooperation in various fields has been rapidly advanced, and the dividends of the resumption of diplomatic relations have been continuously released.

The resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Nigeria is a vivid epitome of the continuous deepening of relations between China and Latin American and Caribbean countries in recent years. Costa Rica, Panama, Dominica, El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Honduras have successively established or restored diplomatic relations with China in compliance with the general trend of history and the trend of the times. More and more Latin American and Caribbean countries are joining the high-quality Belt and Road Initiative, supporting and participating in global development initiatives, global security initiatives, and global civilization initiatives, and working together to build a China-Latin America community with a shared future.

China and Latin America and the Caribbean are located in the east and west, with talents in the north and south, but they are close to each other and share a common destiny. The key lies in the nature of mutual benefit, win-win and common development between China and Latin America. The list of China’s free trade partners in Latin America has increased to five. China and Honduras started free trade agreement negotiations less than four months after the establishment of diplomatic relations. China and Nicaragua efficiently completed free trade negotiations within one year. The China-Nigeria Free Trade Agreement will be completed next year. It will officially come into effect on January 1 and will bring more tangible benefits to the people of the two countries. Including infrastructure, energy and power, social and people’s livelihood and other fields, projects assisted by China and constructed by Chinese enterprises have become a new portrayal of China-Latin America cooperation that jointly benefits people’s livelihood.

China has always believed that Latin America is not an “arena” where various forces fight against each other. We will continue to respect Latin American countries’ independent choice of development paths that suit their own national conditions, support Latin American countries in uniting to strengthen themselves, and use Latin American methods to solve Latin American issues. China is willing to work with Latin America and the Caribbean to deepen China-Latin America relations featuring equality, mutual benefit, innovation, openness and people-benefit in the new era, and jointly promote the construction of a community with a shared future between China and Latin America and the Caribbean to a higher level.
