China Agrees Candidate for Covid-19 Vaccine Injected into the Military

Government China has agreed to use vaccine clinical trial Covid-19 to be injected with their military personnel.

The vaccine is named Ad5-nCoV, which was developed by the Beijing Biotechnology Institute and the CanSino Biologics vaccine company. The Beijing Biotechnology Institute is part of the Chinese Government Military Medical Academy.

In a statement to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange on Monday (29/6), CanSino announced that the Chinese Central Military Commission had agreed to use the vaccine as a special drug needed by the military on June 25.

The special permit will last for one year and will only apply to military personnel.

Reporting from CNNChina has repeatedly stressed that its military is not affected by a pandemic, officials claim the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) has not recorded a single case of the corona virus.

Meanwhile US observers doubt that claim. The US noted that the PLA is the largest force in the world, so it is statistically impossible if its personnel have not been exposed to the virus at all.

Neither the Chinese government nor CanSino mentioned how widely the vaccine would be distributed, as well as which units were selected, or whether the vaccine was mandatory or voluntary for military personnel.

CNN has contacted CanSino to comment on the announcement.

According to CanSino, clinical trials of this vaccine show a ‘good safety profile’ with preliminary results suggesting that Ad5-nCoV has the potential to prevent disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 or the corona virus type that causes Covid-19.

CanSino announced in May that the Canadian government allowed trials of the Ad5-nCoV vaccine to humans.

“This vaccine candidate holds great potential (success),” Canadian National Research Council president Iain Stewart said in a statement at the time.

China is only one of several countries which are in a hurry to produce a corona virus vaccine. The virus has now infected more than 10.3 million people worldwide and killed at least 505 thousand people.

There is no clear picture when the vaccine will be available, but US infectious disease expert Anthony Fauci said there was hope the Covid-19 drug was discovered by the end of 2020. Until now, no approved vaccine has been released commercially.

The WHO says there are currently at least 17 vaccines currently under clinical evaluation throughout the world and eight of them are being developed in China.

CanSino said the first and second phases of their Ad5-nCoV vaccine trial have been completed.

The results of the previous Ad5-nCoV trial, published in the Lancet medical journal, were welcomed with a warm response by experts.

According to the study, almost half of recipients of the Ad5-nCoV vaccine reported side effects of fever, 44 percent were exhausted, and 39 percent felt headaches. Overall, 9 percent of patients reported side effects that were severe enough to potentially interfere with activity.

Speaking to the Global Times tabloid, professor of the National Defense University of the People’s Liberation Army, Li Daguang said the authorities had followed normal procedures to approve the drug being used in the military.
