A city in southeast China, Xiamen, reports another active case COVID-19. On Saturday (18/9/2021), local residents were advised to stay at home and close various public places. The spread of this virus appears during the holiday season.
The Xiamen government, telling local residents not to leave their homes unnecessarily, closed parks, entertainment venues and sports venues, and halted mass activities including holiday trips, exhibitions and performances.
The restrictive measures leading to a full lockdown began on the first of the four-day Mid-Autumn Festival holiday. Usually, this is the peak travel season across China.
Xiamen, is one of the four cities in Fujian province. It is recorded that approximately 5 million people live in Xiamen. The city is a new coronavirus hotspot in China which has reported cases of COVID in recent days.
A number of restrictions have been implemented, including a ban on visiting the Xiamen housing complex without approval, non-essential vehicle traffic from entering and exiting residential areas, and eating at restaurants, cafes and other places.
Previously, the Xiamen transportation hub had reported 92 cases of COVID-19 in the past week. That is half the number of cases in Putian, where the first infection was reported on September 10.
Xiamen authorities on Monday said the first patient in the Xiamen cluster had close contact with the case in Putian.
Meanwhile, since September 10, Fujian province has reported 292 COVID-19 infections.
The outbreak comes ahead of the week-long National Day holiday that begins on October 1. This is a much busier tourist season than the Mid-Autumn festival.
The last domestic outbreak in late July to August spread to dozens of cities in China, hitting China’s tourism, hospitality and transportation sectors.
