China Accelerates Construction of New Gas Pipeline from Turkmenistan

Having abandoned the Russian Power of Siberia 2 project, China has accelerated the construction of a new gas pipeline from Turkmenistan.

The Chinese authorities have accelerated the construction of a new branch of the Central Asia-China gas pipeline and plan to receive 2 times more gas from Turkmenistan. The new line will transit through the territory of Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, after which it will cross the Chinese border in the west. Moreover, the estimated capacity of the new branch will be 50% greater than the capacity of the three already operating gas pipeline lines, writes China Daily.

According to incoming information, the new line will not be built parallel to the three existing lines, but along a different route – through the southern part of Uzbekistan from the Galkynysh gas field. This is where the zone of the supergiant gas and oil field of Turkmenistan is located. According to Gaffney, Cline & Associates, natural gas reserves in the field amount to 21.2 trillion m³.

After completion of work and launch of branch D, Turkmenistan will have to supply 65 billion cubic meters of gas per year to China.

News agencies recall that China previously abandoned the construction of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline, which Russia was actively promoting in an attempt to replace China’s lost gas market in Western Europe.

Earlier, Bloomberg assessed the scale of the Kremlin’s gas collapse.

We also wrote that the “gas hub” between the Russian Federation and Turkey is in danger of collapse.
