China: 5.8 magnitude earthquake shakes Xinjiang province – 2024-02-25 21:38:20

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck Akxi County in northwest China’s Xinjiang Province at 12:14 p.m. local time (06:14 Greek time) today, the China Seismological Network Center (CENC) announced.

The focal depth of the earthquake was 11 kilometers, CENC added.

Until 01:00 p.m. local time, no casualties or collapsed houses had been reported, China’s Xinhua news agency reported, citing local authorities, adding that the areas around the epicenter are sparsely populated.

The local main grid and power distribution networks are operating normally, and local train operations have not been affected, Xinhua said.

A 7.1-magnitude earthquake that struck China’s Xinjiang province near the border with Kyrgyzstan on January 23 killed at least 3 people.
