A 6.1-magnitude earthquake rocked southwest China’s Yunnan province late Friday afternoon, according to the European Seismic Monitoring Service (EMSC), and a Chinese television station reported announced that at least two people had died.
Chinese television station CGTN said on Twitter that rescuers discovered the bodies of two people. She added that nine other people were found in the rubble at the end of the day on Friday.
Authorities said the collapse of some roads and landslides cut some transmission lines, but electricity, telephones and the internet were still working.
In a tweet, state media Global Times said a level 2 emergency has been declared and relief operations have been launched in Dali, a city of 134,000 people in Yunnan province, about 24 km from the epicenter.
