He passed away at 11:17 this morning at the age of 95. The family and Chimei Group are handling relevant matters, and the group will issue a statement as soon as possible.

Xu Wenlong, who was born during the Japanese occupation, came from a poor family. His family of 12 people lived in an 8-square-meter space in Shennong Street, a slum area in Tainan. The difficult environment inspired him to fight. With only a senior engineering degree, he worked and studied since childhood. At the age of 31, he founded Chimei Industries and became the father of acrylic in Taiwan. At the age of 63, he made ABS the number one in the world. He competed with Formosa Plastics in the petrochemical industry and was known as “North Taiwan”. Chimei Electronics was established at the age of 70 and became the fourth largest panel manufacturer in the world.

Chimei Industrial is known as a happy company. It was the first company to implement two days off per week, including setting up a nursery. The starting point was to fully take care of employees, so there were almost no labor disputes.

Chimei Industrial has revenue of hundreds of billions of yuan, but it has never been listed on the market. Because Xu Wenlong believes that “the purpose of running a business is not to make money, but to make everyone happy.” Since it runs counter to the logic of the capital market, he would rather make steady profits than go public.
