The chilling clues uncovered on Snapchat helped investigators make an arrest after a son reported his parents missing.
How the social media app helped investigators solve the mystery case is revealed in a new episode of 48 Hours.
Chandler Halderson, 24, was arrested and convicted of killing his parents.
He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole and had no reaction when the judge gave the verdict in the courtroom.
According to CBS News, a clue on Halderson’s Snapchat helped investigators solve the case before arresting him the day after he reported missing his parents, Bart, 50, and Krista, 53.
The outlet will reveal details of how the social media app’s location services helped investigators find the body of Halderson’s father in an episode of 48 Hours on Saturday night.
Chandler’s girlfriend Cathryn “Cat” Mellender is reportedly keeping an eye on him via Snapchat.
He told investigators that in early July 3 he opened the app and saw Chandler in a remote location near the Wisconsin River and recorded a screenshot of it.
Investigators said: “We needed to search this area due to its remoteness, forest and access to water to see if we could find evidence. “
Part of the body of Halderson’s mother, Kristа, was found along the Wisconsin River near Sаuk City.
His father’s remains were found on a farm about 20 miles from the Halderson home.
Police initially accused the 23-year-old of lying to the police.
When he reported them missing on July 7, 2021, he said they left over the weekend of July 4 to go to their cabin in northern Wisconsin and have not returned.
He also reportedly told police that his parents had gone to see a parade in White Lake, but that no such parade had taken place.
Halderson is said to have used a saw and scissors to cut off his parents’ bodies before throwing some of their remains into the woods and burning others.
During Halderson’s conviction, Dane County District Attorney Assistant William Brown noticed that the ashes in the fireplace at the couple’s home contained human remains.
Halderson had lied to his parents about his attendance at Madison College.
He said he worked for an insurance company and also said he got a Florida job with SpaceX, according to Brown.
The attorney said Bart learned that his son hadn’t attended a college class in more than a semester, Law and Crime reported.
Bart and his son were supposed to meet with school officials before the 23-year-old shot and killed his father on July 1.
