Chile strengthens the Streets without Violence Plan – 2024-08-13 22:39:13

Santiago de Chile/Prensa Latina

Chilean authorities announced on Monday the deployment of another 909 police officers in the Metropolitan Region, where the capital is located, to reinforce the Streets Without Violence Plan.

The officers will be stationed at 400 high-traffic areas, such as shopping centres, metro stations and public transport stops.

At an event held on Monday, President Gabriel Boric stressed the importance of increasing police presence to restore security in the country’s streets and neighborhoods.

Meanwhile, Interior Minister Carolina Tohá acknowledged that it has been more difficult to reduce violent crime in the Metropolitan Region and that is why special reinforcements are needed.

The Streets without Violence Plan includes three phases: the first included 616 police officers, equipped with 100 vehicles, who patrol and inspect areas with a higher probability of crimes such as robbery, drug trafficking and homicide.

The second phase began on Monday with the addition of 909 officers and the third phase will begin in the last quarter of 2024 with another 144 officers.

In total, the Metropolitan Region will have 1,669 new police officers on the streets, according to a statement from the presidency.

At the same time, the work of the Investigative Police and the National Prosecutor’s Office is being strengthened.

Last July, two mass killings took place in this area, costing the lives of nine people, four of them teenagers between 13 and 17 years old, in an event that caused deep shock here.
