Chile, minister under accusation for serious wave of insecurity

(ANSA) – SANTIAGO, CHILE, SEPTEMBER 30 – From the bench of republican deputies (opposition) comes a constitutional accusation against the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, regarding the security crisis that is affecting Chile. In particular the parliamentarians of the Republican Party underline “that Chile is experiencing the worst public security crisis in its history and that, despite temporary adjustments, all indicators point to a critical state of our reality at the national level”, reports the statement from the Chilean Chamber of Deputies . A situation for which the minister would be responsible for having “seriously violated the Constitution and the laws, and having left them unapplied, having not adopted more effective measures to protect the population from crime, drug trafficking and organized crime”. Certainly one of the points taken into consideration to present the constitutional accusation was the “forced” retirement of the former director general of the Carabineros, Ricardo Yáñez. The general has in fact resigned from his position because on October 1st the accusation will be formalized for the crime of omission in the illegitimate arrests carried out by the Carabinieri during the social crisis of 2019, a charge incompatible with the exercise of the managerial role. The three-day period within which the Chamber can notify the Minister of the Interior of its decision begins to run. Once the notification is received, Tohá will have ten days to appear before the Impeachment Committee. (HANDLE).
