The Ministry of Health of Chile reported this Wednesday 1-J of 2,650 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of infections to 282,043, and other 65 deaths that bring the number of deaths to 5,753, while presented a new plan to improve the testing and traceability of cases.

The authorities also announced that all the quarantines in force in the country will be kept for a further week, which currently affects 63 communes, which means that about 9 million people are confined.

The communes affected by the measure are located both in the northern part of the country (Tarapacá and Antofagasta regions) and in the central zone (Valparaíso, Metropolitana, O’Higgins and Maule regions). Likewise, sanitary cords will be established for the cities of Lota and Coronel (south).

Regarding the situation of those patients hospitalized by COVID-19, the undersecretary of Assistance Networks, Arturo Zúñiga pointed out that there are 2,075 people in intensive care units; 1,720 of them connected to mechanical ventilators, while of the latter, 407 would be in a critical state of health.

Traceability plan

The Undersecretary of Public Health, Paula Daza, reported on the implementation starting this Saturday of a plan to strengthen the testing, traceability and isolation strategy that has been carried out so far.

In this way, the virtual platform that stores the data of confirmed and suspected cases at the national level would be strengthened so that as soon as a laboratory confirms a new case, the information is uploaded to that platform.

This information may be consulted simultaneously both by primary care professionals and by regional and national authorities of the Ministry of Health.

Likewise, the platform would be sought to allow health services to contact the infected patient, as well as to identify and in turn contact the patient’s close contacts in less than 48 hours.

Precisely this day, the Medical College of Chile presented a proposal for a National Traceability Plan that coordinates laboratories, health systems, primary care centers and medical residences and has a national registry.

According to this body, 9,729 tracers are needed at the country level for the strategy to be effective.

“We suspect that we are going to have, most likely, some pressure from some sectors due to early deconfusion. Without this strategy, we will most likely have outbreaks, as has happened in many countries around the world. It is not enough to have a couple of tracers and say that we are tracing, “said the president of the Medical College, Izkia Siches, when presenting the plan.

With the more than 282,000 cases reported today and when compared with the data provided by the US Johns Hopkins University, Chile, it is seventh in the world for the countries with the highest number of cases of coronavirus.

However, the country is just over 3,000 infections to overcome its predecessor in the ranking, its neighbor Peru, a country that has 285,213 cases.
