MADRID, 14 Mar. (EUROPA PRESS) –
The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, promulgated this Thursday the so-called private security law, which will allow the sector to be regulated amid an increase in insecurity and violence in the Latin American country.
The measure, which was approved on November 29 in Congress, will allow “greater territorial control of the Carabineros and Investigative Police.” Boric has announced that he has ordered the Minister of the Interior, Carolina Tohá, to begin the process so that the law can be implemented “in less than three months.”
«This law is part of the 23 projects of the ‘Prioritized Agenda for Security Matters’, and with it we have made the most robust progress in our history in the improvement of security legislation, adding a total of 51 approved projects. », Boric explained on the social network X, formerly Twitter.
The new rule includes more severe penalties for those who attack private guards, while also establishing a series of regulations, such as having a series of qualifications in the exercise of the profession, as well as a modernization of certification processes.
In Chile there are more than 2,500 security companies, as well as more than 86,000 accredited guards. In the Latin American country there was no comprehensive regulation on private security, according to the news portal BioBio Chile.
The law has been promulgated at a time when the president of Chile has announced an extensive package of measures to combat insecurity due to the increase in crime and organized crime in several areas of the country, including the metropolitan region of Santiago.
Last April, the Government announced around 1.5 billion dollars (about 1.37 billion euros) to reinforce the country’s security budget with the aim of reinforcing police patrols and freeing agents from administrative tasks.
