(ANSA) – SANTIAGO, CHILE, OCTOBER 29 – The businessman Marcelo Naranjo was sentenced by a court in Santiago to 24 years in prison for the murder of Francisca Sandoval, the first Chilean journalist killed since the return to democracy in 1990. The first May 2022, during a demonstration, a clash occurred between protesters and a group of shopkeepers from the Meiggs neighborhood, who tried to prevent the passage of the procession with violence. Naranjo had led the counter-demonstration with a group of shopkeepers and, using a firearm, fired into the crowd, wounding Sandoval in the face. The 30-year-old reporter, who was covering the events for community television Señal 3 de La Victoria, was taken to a hospital and underwent emergency surgery. On May 12 of the same year, after 12 days in a coma, his death was announced. Since then Naranjo has been in prison and, as established by the Chilean justice system, he still has 22 years left to serve. (HANDLE).
