Today is World Diabetes Day. But how do you explain to a child what diabetes is and how to use insulin? Together with 10 other Flemish hospitals, UZ Ghent developed a number of children’s videos, covering all aspects of type 1 diabetes. This way, children can become acquainted with the disease in an accessible way. The videos are available in 5 languages, so that people who do not speak Dutch well receive correct information.
In an animated video, Sara tells you more about diabetes. 1 in 700 children under the age of 18 will develop type 1 diabetes. But what exactly is that and how do you explain it to your child? Everything about diabetes is explained tailored to the children using 16 short videos. It is a collaboration between eleven Flemish hospitals, including UZ Gent. All videos launch today on World Diabetes Day.
Sara Van Aken – pediatric endocrinologist UZ Ghent: “If a child gets type 1 diabetes, he or she is always very ill and must always go to the hospital immediately and start treatment, which also requires a lot of explanation. What is type 1 diabetes, what is a normal sugar level, how do you give insulin, where are carbohydrates in the diet? So a lot of people come to explain things and we have about fifteen videos to cover all those topics.
The videos are available in 5 languages. Dutch, French, Turkish, Berber and Arabic. By showing the videos in the native language, communication runs much smoother.
