The children’s and youth vocal ensemble “Podziņa” of the Riga Culture and Folk Art Center “Mazā Ģilde” has released a real dance music album, in which each song is in a familiar and popular dance rhythm through the years and centuries.
The album “Rīgas kalnu lielā balle” contains songs in the rhythm of hubs, cha-cha-cha, “house”, hip-hop, rock and roll, bosanova, pasadobles, break and even waltz. In addition, each of the songs sings one of the big and small mountains of Riga, so the album includes such songs as “Lapsu kalna” house “(Flying aunt)”, “Torņkalna break”, “Ziepniekkalna hip-hop”, “Āgenskalna fanks” . The album was supposed to be released already this spring, when a pop group concert performance was planned, in which the dancers of the dance group “Dzintariņš” would have taken part, but the restrictions caused by the pandemic prevented it from being realized. We waited until the last moment, but we decided to release the album later this year, because it was nurtured for a long time, ”said Guntars Račs. The album also includes instrumental accompaniments of songs, but the booklet contains the lyrics of all the songs. The author of the song “Sudrabkalniņa valsis” is Gints Stankevičs, who is also the producer of the album’s vocal recordings. Accompaniments were composed by producer Artūrs Palkevičs, but one song was also composed by Jānis Zvirgzdiņš or Džulians. The author of the album cover drawing is the well-known book illustration artist Agija Stake, who has noticed the mountains mentioned in Riga in the design of the CD cover.
