Children without shelter: personnel threatened, security forces on duty

Due to the lack of staff, the groups in kindergartens and crèches had to be closed in Styria.

The misery was predictable: at the beginning of August, the associations promoting nurseries and crèches in Styria warned that in the autumn things could get worse: the groups should be closed due to lack of staff. Parents may miss the childcare places they have already promised. The state government of Styria has come up with a package that includes incentives such as a bonus of 15,000 euros – a bonus for trained primary school teachers who commit to work full-time in a childcare facility for three years.

But apparently it came too late: strong ORF Steiermark the “WIKI” association alone has 100 fewer places available for children than originally planned – the culprit is the lack of staff.

CEO Christian Leitner had to resort to an unusual measure: he used the security forces of a security company: angry parents, whose children didn’t get a job, insulted and threatened employees.

Five locations were hit on Monday at the start of the new kindergarten year, but security did not have to intervene. Further closures and cuts to nursery schools are not to be excluded, on Thursday the explosive issue will also reach the state parliament of Styria: there will be a special session. In addition, the affected parents are planning – several hundred families in Styria have been left behind – a protest in Graz, which is scheduled for Friday.
