Children with disabilities will see their education diminished in this school year: activist – El Sol de Toluca

The education of children and adolescents with a disability will be diminished during the 2021-2022 school year, given the difficult back-to-school outlook that has been experienced during the first week of the period, said Luis Roberto Ortiz Ortega, a rights activist human rights of people with disabilities.

He recalled that prior to the pandemic, there were already deficiencies in the educational sector in terms of attention to this sector of the population, which will surely have a significant increase in the school year that has just begun.

Many of them do not have the tools or the necessary support to be able to promote their education, unfortunately our education in Mexico is of an average level and for the disability sector it becomes below average due to lack of support ”, commented the activist, who pointed out that there are several educational establishments that are not prepared to receive people with disabilities.

Luis Roberto Ortiz added that a large part of the sector with school-age disabilities did not have enough resources to access a computer or smartphone to access virtual classes in the past school year, however, the outlook is worse for the 2021 cycle- 2022 in the absence of virtual classes, especially in public educational institutions.

“By itself in a face-to-face class when there is a person with a disability we do not believe that the attention is personalized, in fact, the teachers tell you that you cannot focus on one or two people, if that is complicated, now imagine online , last year the attention was zero and now with this (the absence of virtual classes) worse, because there will be neither knowledge nor learning ”, argued the activist.

In this context, the activist assured that the family is the most important and essential point of support for people with disabilities of school age, since they will be the ones who have the responsibility of promoting their learning.

When asked about the actions to be implemented in the entity’s educational establishments for the reception of people with disabilities in the framework of the pandemic, Luis Roberto Ortiz pointed out at the beginning, the ramps at the entrances to the buildings, since there are still some that they do not have these and they impede the mobility of those who have to use wheelchairs or crutches, for example.

In addition to the easy location of antibacterial gel dispensers, temperature taps and sanitizing mats.

According to the INEGI Population and Housing Census 2020, in the state of Mexico of 16 million 992 thousand 418 inhabitants, 16.4% had a limitation in daily activity or some problem or mental condition, that is, 2 million 786 1,679 people.

Of that total, 10.7% (80 thousand 736) were from 0 to 14 years old and 11.7% were from 15 to 29 years old (88 thousand 301 people).
