Children warn of war and intolerance

Kudos from the mayor to the fourth graders who presented the mayor with the results of their children’s peace meeting on Thursday afternoon, in which – as reported – 1,300 children from 13 primary and special schools took part. “We learn from you children,” said Lewe when he accepted the oversized peace book, in which photographs of the large-format posters of the individual schools were bound together with the children’s ideas for peace and wishes.

The peace books of the Münster schools, of which individual copies are exhibited in the foyer of the Friedenssaal, have a long tradition – the first children’s peace meeting took place in 1998, in the anniversary year of 350 years of the Peace of Westphalia. For a few weeks now, the copies with photos of the individual peace meetings have also been digitally available in the town hall of the town hall.

In the Peace Book 2021, the children have put together wishes for a peaceful and tolerant coexistence with a lot of color and symbolism. “We know children from Syria and Afghanistan who witnessed the war themselves,” says one of the elementary school students, who also designed 6,000 cards and sent messages of peace to relatives and friends. “We wish that everyone grows up in peace and that all children are as well off as we are in Münster,” adds one student.

Lewe encourages the children and reports that the peace books are also seen when heads of state and diplomats visit the town hall. “Then we will become famous”, triumphs Sophie (8).

For the first time, the digitized version of the current Peace Book can be viewed online.
