From December 23, children up to the age of twelve can travel for free by bus in a large part of North Holland, if they are accompanied by an adult. This is now possible in more and more places in the Netherlands.
The province of North Holland announced on Wednesday that children can take the bus for free in the transport regions of North Holland North and Haarlem/IJmond. This has been possible in Gooi and Vechtstreek since 2020. In Amsterdam too, traveling children have been free on buses, trams and metros since the summer.
With this measure, the province wants to make public transport more attractive for families. “If children learn to use public transport at a young age, they will often choose public transport later,” says Jeroen Olthof (PvdA), deputy in North Holland. The province pays 125,000 euros for this annually.
Children can also take the bus or tram for free in Utrecht if they travel with their parents. A test was carried out in the province during the summer and autumn holidays. At the end of November, the province of Utrecht announced that the trial would be extended.
