Children Threaten Teacher with Toy Guns: Police Action and Consequences

A teacher at the Blankenese district school (Frahmstrasse) was teaching her 8th grade class of 20 students when two boys – presumably an 11- and a 12-year-old – entered the room, pulled out a real-looking pistol and threatened the teacher. They then disappeared from the classroom.

Children threaten teachers with toy weapons – triggering police action

The teacher informed the school management and the police were called: Because of the unclear threat situation, the school grounds were completely cordoned off and more than 400 officers, including patrol officers and special forces, arrived. The students were gradually brought to safety on buses. The operation was over at around 3 p.m.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the police received a tip about a similar case at the Mendelssohnstrasse school (Bahrenfeld): A teacher there was also said to have been threatened with a pistol by an unknown person.

Civil investigators then arrested four suspects (11, 12, 12 and 14 years old) in the area of the sports fields on Baurstrasse. They seized two toy guns. A 13-year-old also came into the focus of the officers, whose parents’ apartment was searched that same evening. The emergency services found another toy gun there.

Parents have to fork out for the effort – probably well over 50,000 euros

The suspects, all of whom, according to MOPO information, attend the Esther Bejarano School (formerly the Bahrenfeld District School) on Regerstrasse, were handed over to their parents. The LKA 124, which is responsible for youth violence in the Altona area, is conducting the investigation.

It is likely that the proceedings against the children will be discontinued due to criminal incompetence. The youth welfare office will speak to the boys and their parents, discuss measures such as mandatory psychological support and, if in doubt, order them. Expulsion of the suspected perpetrators from school is already considered certain. In the further process, the school supervisory authority is involved when it comes to the question of which new school the children and young people will go to.

According to MOPO information, the police will also bill the parents for the costs of the large-scale operation – probably well over 50,000 euros. An official: “It could also be more.” You can read more background information about the incident and what happens next at the school according to headmaster Philip Reuter mopo.de.
