Children Robbing Restaurants and Bars in Manhattan: A Growing Concern

Restaurants and bars in the Manhattan area reported that they have been victims of a group of children who have robbed them and their customers.

These are about three minors between 8 and 10 years old who have committed at least two robberies in recent days.

On the Upper East Side, a camera at the Lexington Publick bar managed to capture one of these minors when he entered the back room.

The boy asked the place for permission to enter the bathroom, but instead he opened a door where the business’s safe was located and took about $700, which was the accumulated amount of tips.

In other businesses in the area they have seen this group of minors hanging around and asking diners for money.

Customers have also said they are victims of theft.

Jeffrey García, president of the Latino Restaurant and Bar Association, regretted that adults are using these children for this type of crime.

“The owners are now going to have to keep an eye on the outside areas to ensure that minors are not involved in it (stealing),” he lamented.

“It is very sad that adults are using minors,” he said.

Érika Heras, manager of a business in the area, commented that this group of minors constantly break into restaurants to ask for money.

“They come when they are busiest and they just grab and get in, before we realize they are already on the tables. There is only one, the others are waiting beyond,” she said.

“There are people who want to give them food and they say, I don’t want food, I want money.”

Because they are under 12 years old, they cannot be accused of crimes.

Only the adults who would be inciting them to commit these robberies could be charged.
