244 letters and 30 drawings: this is what elementary students from École Lacroix, École Monseigneur-Fortier and CPE La Fourmille sent to hospitalized patients in Beauce during this holiday season.
This idea was launched by Jessica Leblanc, social worker at Saint-Georges hospital, who aimed to ensure that each person hospitalized in their work unit receives a letter during the holidays.
« Isolation is difficult for everyone at the moment, but you can see it even more in the hospital where people are really more isolated. », Explains Jessica Leblanc.
The Georgian therefore decided to contact two teachers from the Lacroix school living near her home, Monique Roy and Caroline Saint-Laurent, in order to see if they were interested in involving their students in writing the letters before the end of the classes.
Not only did they answer the call, but they also got several other classes in the school to do the same. So eight classes from Lacroix school (2nd, 3rd and 4th year) began to write the letters.
Two friends of Jessica Leblanc whose children go to Monseigneur-Fortier school also contacted teachers at the establishment. Two groups of students were therefore added.
In addition, young children from CPE la Fourmille also participated in the project by donating drawings, as did some children of hospital staff.
In total, 244 letters and 30 Christmas drawings were created, a number more than enough for all the patients hospitalized at Saint-Georges hospital. This is why several letters and drawings were also sent to the Richard-Busque and L’Assomption CHSLDs in Saint-Georges as well as to the non-traditional site (SNT) in Guadeloupe where patients with COVID-19 are treated. .
In CHSLDs, nurses distributed the letters. At the hospital, Jessica and doctor Marie-Nöel Delisle handled the distribution.
“It was a very beautiful moment, many people were touched and moved, some laughed while reading the messages of the children. For others, it was childhood memories that resurfaced », Says the social worker.
She concludes by mentioning that she would like to renew the project next year.
Note that sanitary and logistical measures were established and respected during the distribution of letters.
