Children of Purgatory: A Talk with French Journalist Close Ardid at the University of Nîmes

Thursday November 23 at 6 p.m. in Amphi A1 of the University of Nîmes (Vauban site)

With the presence of Close Ardid, French journalist, screenwriter, director and author. First a senior reporter for the newspapers Var matin then Nice matin, in 1998 he joined the teams of the programs Argent public, Envoyé special and Complément d’investigation. He collaborated on the production of documentaries for Canal + before directing documentaries and docu-dramas himself.

Children of Purgatory

Child pornography, shaken babies, rape and sexual assault, child kidnapping, prostitution!

1,200 files are processed each year by the Marseille Minors’ Brigade, a terrifying showcase of a society increasingly adrift.

Close Ardid spent two months in total immersion in this very special police unit, alongside extraordinary women and men whose mission is to save, often in a real race against time, all these young victims of violence.

He monitored day and night the five groups in charge of abuse and incestuous behavior, morals files and disturbing disappearances, and even Internet surveillance. Hard work of police custody, hearings and interventions on the ground, carried out in collaboration with judges and magistrates equally devoted to the cause of the victims.

This unprecedented investigation highlights a terrible reality: there are always more damaged children, broken families, young people forced to sell themselves. Not to mention a cruel lack of resources for the police and justice.

But this book also highlights the unique investment, self-sacrifice and sense of duty of these civil servants – the majority are women – whose mission, often a vocation, is today more than essential.
