CLUBS AND CORONA: The gymnastics club Mittleres Elztal is feeling the loss of association ties / trainers looked for other jobs.
(BZ). The corona pandemic restricts public life. Clubs are also affected. The Badische Zeitung therefore asks how the clubs have experienced the past few months and how they look to the future. Today: Patricia Khuu from the Turnverein Mittleres Elztal.
» What effects did Corona have on your club life?
Our club sport has come to a standstill, which is particularly bitter for the children. The children’s gymnastics / parent-child gymnastics can no longer take place since March of last year due to the corona requirements. Sport, exercise and social interaction during the lessons are of the utmost importance for the children. Our offers for adults could only be offered under the strictest conditions and only for a short time. In addition, our summer festival and the St. Nicholas celebration fell victim to the pandemic, which we all regretted very much. Fortunately, because of good incidences in the summer, as every year, we were able to make our contribution to the community’s children’s holiday program.
How did your club react to the restrictions?
In the board of directors we were in close contact all year round by phone and email, the general meeting could not take place last year and will be made up for this year. Since all of our offers could only take place little or not at all, the board had decided not to collect any membership fees for the time being. So the terminations were limited. Of course, there were no new registrations. For financial reasons and also because of the cooperation in the sports lessons, we hope that the situation will ease soon. The fear of members leaving is always on our necks, so we are very grateful to those who remain loyal to us despite the current situation!
What impact does
Corona on club life?
Of course, we hope that after Corona most things can go back to normal. We are very hopeful because we believe that especially in children, the urge to move and also the need to be able to let off steam and exercise with their peers is very high. And so we in this age group are very confident that most of them will come back and new children will come. Unfortunately, two trainers broke away in the children’s and parent-child gymnastics division. They lacked the additional income and they had to reorient themselves. We are therefore desperately looking for trainers who enjoy working with children aged one and a half to ten years. The search is difficult anyway, but in the current situation that has only increased. In the other areas, the pandemic has unfortunately taught us that you don’t necessarily need the club to be able to move individually. Cycling, jogging or then – like last summer – swimming in the outdoor pool is also possible without a club.
Patricia khuu has been an assessor on the board since 2015, and chairwoman of the gymnastics club since 2017. Before that, she had been actively involved for many years – with children and herself.
