Children infected with Covid-19 can also experience complications

Suara.com – Covid-19 infection can cause complications dangerous to anyone, including child-child. Pediatrician Dr. dr. Ni Putu Siadi Purniti Sp.A(K)., said that whether or not a child’s condition is severe when infected with Covid-19 is greatly influenced by his immunity.

“Severe conditions usually occur in children who have basic diseases, especially those with low immunity. What is known as the multi-organ Covid system, it can happen to children,” said doctor Siadi in a live broadcast of Health Radio of the Ministry of Health, Monday (5/7/2021) .

Complications that can cause various symptoms experienced by children. Such as rashes on the skin, disorders of non-respiratory organs, for example, the heart and brain. It can also affect other nerve tracts or the gastrointestinal tract.

However, most often complications do occur in the respiratory tract. Doctor Saidi warned that the complications were very dangerous and the patient could develop into a critical condition.

“Most often if it goes to the respiratory tract. It will stimulate inflation which we call a cytokine storm. So the lungs are full of cytokines, i.e. inflammatory cells in the lungs, then of course breathing is not good. Even if there is a high possibility of getting a secondary infection. So it’s not just the virus infects the respiratory tract but there are bacteria too. This is what we often see in Covid patients,” he explained.

Symptoms of Covid-19 in children generally the same as adults. Such as fever, cough, runny nose, to pneumonia. Doctor Siadi also said that there were even children who did not experience any symptoms at all even though they had been confirmed positive for Covid-19.

It’s just that the classification of mild, moderate, severe and even critical symptoms in children is different from adults. Because the child must be adjusted to his age.

“How we classify what we call mild symptoms, severe symptoms, or what we call pneumonia caused by Covid, that’s a little different. For example, how old is he, how do we determine the presence of rapid breathing. The groups differ from 0 to 2 months, 1 year to 5 years, it’s different. So doctors must know which one is classified as mild, moderate, even critical,” he explained.
