A burglary by two runaway children has turned into a shooting with police officers in the US state of Florida. The 14-year-old girl and 12-year-old boy had found an AK-47, a pistol, a rifle and a large amount of ammunition in the home.
From county sheriff was stunned by the violence. “None of us come to work to shoot anyone and we certainly don’t expect to get into a gunfight with a 14-year-old and a 12-year-old.”
The children had run away from a home in Enterprise. After breaking into a home in that town near Orlando, neighbors who heard glass shattering alerted the police.

When officers arrived, the two opened fire. The police surrounded the house and tried to negotiate, for example by throwing a mobile phone at them. That failed.
As the two continued to fire, the officers eventually fired back. The girl was shot and disarmed, the boy then surrendered. The girl is in stable condition after surgery. No officers were injured.
According to the county sheriff the girl had a criminal record for arson on vacant lots. He seizes the incident to argue for better treatment for juvenile delinquents, who, according to him, are ‘cated’ in homes instead of receiving treatment.
“How we’re doing it now doesn’t work. It really doesn’t work.”
