Children in particular are affected: More Ortenau suffer from depression – Offenburg

“Basically, fear is a sensible reaction,” explains AOK doctor Zipp. It warns of dangers and puts the body on alert – basically a device that is essential for survival. When the danger is over, the fear should also go away. “If the fear occurs in actually non-dangerous situations and the threat is not appropriate, we speak of an anxiety disorder,” explains Zipp.

According to the AOK Südlicher Oberrhein, typical signs of a depressive illness are depressed mood, loss of interest and joylessness as well as lack of drive and fatigue. Physical complaints include, for example, gastrointestinal problems, pain, dizziness or shortness of breath. People with depression often avoid social contact and rarely leave the house. The risk of alcohol, medication or drug abuse also increases.

Debilitating sadness is reason to seek treatment

“In the case of mild depression, it is possible to first wait and see whether the symptoms subside again without treatment,” says Zipp. During this time, the child or young person may need more understanding and support. “In the case of more severe symptoms, such as paralyzing sadness or unwillingness to live, it is important to contact the pediatrician’s practice immediately. Psychotherapeutic facilities, psychological counseling centers or telephone counseling can also be contact points.”

Together with general practitioners, paediatricians, psychotherapists and psychiatrists, the AOK has agreed to promote the mental health of children and young people. In addition, the “Family Coach Depression” offers help for relatives and friends, who often reach the limits of their resilience. More information is available online at www.aok.de.
