This week, Kautokeino set a cold record for this millennium. On Thursday, it was measured as low as −43.5 degrees. However, that does not stop the municipality from releasing the smallest residents.

The answer is short and clear when VG calls the manager of the kindergartens in Kautokeino:

– The children play outside here, answers Britt Ørnebakk.

– Restless

With a double layer of wool, parka suit, scarf, mittens and hat, the children enjoy themselves outside despite the Siberian cold.

– We see when there are long periods when it is cold, they become restless just being inside. Then we take them out for a walk, says Ørnebakk and adds that the outdoor-loving children still have to make do with 15–20 minutes at a time.

– Are there no children complaining about the temperature?

– Well, we have some people who don’t want to go out when it’s ten plus degrees too, so there are always some who don’t want to go out, she says and explains that there are others who are more worried.

– Those who are more worried are perhaps some parents. Preferably people who have moved here, and who are not as used to the cold.

According to the business manager, there are even some of the children who think it’s great to be outside and experiment with the cold.

– For example, throwing hot water into cold air. In addition, there are very nice colors outside when it is as cold as now.

Don’t want a limit

The municipal superintendent in Kautokeino, Anne Lajla Westefjell Kalstad, also supports Ørnebakk. She highlights the importance of being outside despite the sub-zero temperatures.

– It is extremely important to have knowledge of how to tolerate the cold when you live in Finnmark.

And injuries – no, the doctor is not afraid of that happening either.

– Does anyone get frostbite?

– We see little of that. It is a society that is always cold, and children must learn to cope with it, says the municipal superintendent.

– If we were to operate with a lower limit, the children would hardly have been allowed outside. That’s why we don’t do it here, as they might do elsewhere in the country.

Kalstad, on the other hand, emphasizes how important it is to dress correctly.

– It is important to have good clothes, wool and several layers. The face should be covered, and one should wear a hat, scarf and good gloves. Then you have to keep an eye on each other, and that no one gets frostbite.

The municipality, which is located on Finnmarksvidda, is already well known for its low numbers on the temperature scale. It also reflects how they dress.

– We learn that they tolerate being outside for short periods well, and everyone here knows how to dress. They have clothes that can withstand the cold, concludes the municipal superintendent.
