It is striking that twenty-three substances were found among the polluting substances that forbidden to be in the European Union. At least one of these substances has been detected in half of the children. The banned substances can remain in the environment for up to decades, so that traces from before the ban can still end up in our bodies. The insecticide DNOC, which has been banned since 1999, was also found.
But imported food can also be a source, if for example rice abroad, before it was imported, was treated with a pesticide that is banned here. “It is prohibited in Europe to use those substances, but apparently they end up here because of import and export,” says November. Test Aankoop therefore demands stricter supervision from Europe to prevent the substances from ending up in our food and environment.
