Children from peasant communities in Cusco stayed and trained at the CAR Legado in Punta Rocas

At the Legado del Car de Surf headquarters in Punta Rocas, the children slept in comfortable rooms, occupied the dining room and many of the days after their games, they used the swimming pools and the sand fields.

A group of 22 children from the Sinkumunchis foundation in Cusco stayed for 4 weeks at the Legado Punta Rocas High Performance Surf Center, using its facilities in preparation for a soccer championship. During their stay they enjoyed the swimming pools and the rooms of this great infrastructure facing the sea.

“We develop sports schools in various Quechua-speaking peasant communities in Cusco, in the Sacred Valley area, Peru,” says Gonzalo García, president of Sinkumunchis and coach of this group of children from population centers in the districts of Pisaq, Maras , Huayllabamba, Urubamba and Calca. They also came accompanied by 5 adults, who are mothers of families and sports technical personnel.

What motivated him to manage this initiative was to observe that, where they live, there are no sports programs that allow these children to train competitively. “With the necessary experiences, perhaps someone can have the opportunity of a sports career,” he says.

He adds that the soccer tournament corresponds to the U12 category, organized by Sporting Cristal. “We have chosen to do a one-month preparatory program in order to provide the most enriching and educating experience possible; and give them the opportunity to prove themselves in a high-performance competition,” explains García.

Gonzalo García maintains that this type of program breaks a sense of isolation and gives them the power to have the interaction and stimulation that any child at that age deserves.

“Many of the boys, apart from going to school, have to work on the farms. If they are not doing work with their families in the fields, in agriculture and livestock; They probably wouldn’t have to eat, this is their life routine,” he comments.

Although, in the physical aspect, the difference in height with other children in the championship is evident, in Lima, Gonzalo highlights “they are very strong kids, because they come from very tough conditions; That’s why they have a lot of strength in their lower extremities.” Likewise, “their temperament on the court has been quite good and they have known how to deal with it,” he admits.

Legado continues working and reaffirming its commitment to the development and growth of sport through the organization of international competitions, placing emphasis on the good management and maintenance of its venues at the service of high performance and citizenship.
